Since 2019, mobile phone detection cameras in Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, and Port Stephens, Australia have fined over $4.6 million distracted drivers. The state government's world-first program has significantly changed driver behavior, reducing the rate of mobile phone offenses from 1 in 82 drivers to 1 in 815. The cameras now also detect seatbelt violations, with fines collected supporting road safety education, infrastructure, and school zone lights.
