Oxford and Cambridge researchers develop origami-inspired folding implants for safer epilepsy surgeries.

Researchers at the University of Oxford and Cambridge developed folding implants inspired by origami, which expand in the brain, potentially making epilepsy surgeries safer. The electrodes can fit through a 6mm surgical slit and cover an area five times larger once unfurled, reducing brain surgery needed, lowering infection risk, and cutting recovery times. The team aims to refine the device and start UK trials within two years.
