54-year-old Bryant Phillips, a retired Marine from Washington, D.C., was sentenced to two consecutive life terms for kidnapping, sexually assaulting, and physically abusing his former girlfriend in 2022. The victim, who was in a consensual relationship with Phillips, was held hostage for three days before managing to escape. Approximately 300,000 women are abducted annually in the United States, with over 70% of victims knowing their abductors. In this case, the victim was able to escape, a feat achieved by only 53% of abducted women.
