The annual New Yam festival in Ibule Soro, Ondo State was disrupted by violence on 25 August due to disagreements over the festival date. The dispute arose between two factions, one led by traditional ruler Oba Ogunlade who chose 25 August for the festival, coinciding with his coronation anniversary, while the other insisted on their traditional date of 9 August. The ensuing chaos resulted in arrests and a police intervention using tear gas to disperse the crowd. The Ondo State Police have since claimed to have brought the situation under control.
