23-year-old Spanish triple jumper Jordan Diaz won the first-ever Olympic gold medal for Spain in the event, defeating reigning champion Pedro Pichardo of Portugal (silver) and Italy's Andy Diaz Hernandez (bronze) in Paris. All three medalists were Cuban-born and were previously representing Cuba before switching allegiance.
