Sri Lanka's Dept of Wildlife Conservation is conducting a nationwide elephant census Aug 17-19, with 3,130 survey sites. The census aims to establish new protected areas, improve existing ones, reduce elephant-human conflicts, and balance conservation needs with development. Last census in 2011 estimated 5,879 elephants in Sri Lanka with 55.09% adults, 25.03% young, 12.04% calves, and 6.04% infants.
