South Africa's state-owned electricity company, Eskom, reduced diesel expenses by R9.59bn ($570m) over five months, avoiding load shedding for 135 days. The utility's improved efficiency raised the average energy availability factor to 68%, and fewer unplanned outages occurred, averaging between 9,800MW and 12,400MW since 1 April. This success could help Eskom achieve its goal of eradicating load shedding within two years.
