US speeds up development of advanced nuclear reactors for carbon-free electricity, receiving $900m in funding.

The US is accelerating efforts to license and construct next-generation nuclear reactors to produce carbon-free electricity, focusing on small modular reactors and advanced reactors using alternative coolants like liquid metal, helium, or liquid salt for safer operations. Both Congress and the administration support the faster development, and the US Energy Department has announced $900m in funding. These reactors can be a climate solution as they don't emit greenhouse gases, and the timeline for them to come online is uncertain, with TerraPower's project aiming for commercial operation in Wyoming in 2030 if approved.
