1st baby gorilla born at Detroit Zoo after 96 years, increasing gorilla count to five.

Detroit Zoo made history with its first baby gorilla birth in its 96-year existence. Mother gorilla Bandia, 26, gave birth to a healthy baby, increasing the total gorilla count at the zoo to five, including father Mshindi. Staff had been preparing the gorilla troop for months, even using a stuffed gorilla to teach handling and care. The habitat will reopen once the animal care team determines that mother and baby are bonded and comfortable in their environment.
