McMaster University researchers identify intestinal epithelium as key immune response in celiac disease, paving way for new treatments beyond gluten-free diet.

McMaster University researchers, along with international colleagues, found the intestinal epithelium crucial in the immune response of celiac disease. This breakthrough in understanding the disease's development could pave the way for new drug treatments, currently requiring a strict gluten-free diet. Future detection of pathogens in those at risk of developing celiac disease may also help prevent the disease by inhibiting interactions with gluten and the gut epithelium.
