India's Shipping Minister introduces two shipping bills in Lok Sabha on 9 Aug 2024 aiming to modernize and align with international conventions.

India's Shipping Minister, Sarbananda Sonowal, introduced two shipping bills in the Lok Sabha on August 9, 2024, aiming to align with international conventions and adapt to the evolving global shipping industry. The Carriage of Goods by Sea Bill, 2024, seeks to modernize and simplify the existing Indian Carriage of Goods by Sea Act, 1925. Trinamool Congress's Saugata Roy opposed the bill, arguing that the 1925 Act has been effective for 100 years. However, Sonowal countered that the 1925 Act's age necessitates updates to align with international standards and ensure ease of understanding for those within the shipping industry.
