The US Department of Energy is providing a $1.45bn loan to South Korean solar company Qcells for constructing a solar panel manufacturing plant in Cartersville, Georgia. This marks the first loan from the US government for a crystalline silicon solar plant and is a crucial step in developing the domestic US solar supply chain. The Cartersville plant, which will employ 2,000 people when complete, will be the largest ingot and wafer plant in the US, with a capacity of 3.3 gigawatts of solar panels each year. This investment aims to reduce carbon emissions from power generation and meet the US's solar panel requirements.
