UK water regulator Ofwat proposes £168m in fines for Thames Water and two other companies for ineffective sewage treatment leading to river pollution.

UK water regulator Ofwat proposes £168m in fines for Thames Water and two other major water companies for failing to manage sewage treatment works effectively, which contributed to pollution in rivers. The fines will be covered by investors and not lead to higher bills for customers. England's Environment Secretary has welcomed the fines as a consequence for those responsible for polluting rivers, lakes and seas. Environmental groups and campaigners are calling for further action, including a ban on shareholder dividends and bonuses for the polluting companies and increased support for regulators.
