Scientists edit SmLOG1 gene in eggplants, creating prickle-free varieties with CRISPR-Cas9.

Scientists at Jiangsu Normal University and the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences have identified the SmLOG1 gene, which plays a crucial role in prickle formation in eggplants. Using CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing, they successfully modified prickly eggplants to be prickle-free. This breakthrough offers practical applications in breeding prickleless eggplant varieties, enhancing agricultural efficiency, and reducing labor requirements for cultivation and harvesting.
