New Zealand food costs rise, impacting low-income children's health & nutrition.

New Zealand's soaring food costs, with lower-cost healthy foods rising by 35% between 2018 and 2023, are negatively impacting children's health, according to a study by the University of Auckland, Auckland University of Technology, and Massey University. High food prices are forcing many low-income families to struggle with providing healthy food for their children, contributing to high rates of overweight and obese children in New Zealand, where only 5.4% of children aged two to 14 eat the recommended daily servings of vegetables. The researchers suggest that policy initiatives, such as incentivizing local food production and implementing free school meals, could help address the issue of child nutrition and reduce the impact of food cost increases on children's health.
