Florida Atlantic University study links daily alcohol use in older adults to doubled risk of fatal brain bleeds from falls.

A study by Florida Atlantic University's Schmidt College of Medicine links daily alcohol use in older adults to doubled risk of brain bleeds from falls, which cause 36,500 deaths in the U.S. annually. Occasional alcohol use increased odds of intracranial hemorrhage by 2x, while daily use increased it by 150%. Researchers recommend considering alcohol use an independent, modifiable risk factor and incorporating alcohol use assessment and mitigation strategies in fall prevention strategies.
