2009-2017 Permian Basin earthquakes linked to wastewater injection by SMU seismologists.

SMU seismologists published a study in The Seismic Record that links an increase in earthquakes in the Permian Basin, TX/NM before 2017 to underground wastewater injection, a byproduct of oil & gas extraction. The study, using advanced earthquake location methods, shows that seismicity from 2009-2017 occurred in or near shallow depth wastewater injection units. Results help regulators and industry develop better mitigation strategies to reduce earthquake risks.
