453 people died cleaning sewers, despite 732 out of 766 Indian districts claiming to be manual scavenging-free, according to the Union Social Justice and Empowerment ministry. The ban on manual scavenging is enforced by the Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act of 2013. The government approved Rs. 371 crore under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban 2.0) to help smaller towns acquire advanced machinery for mechanization and improve sanitation services safety.
