Leeds, Grenville, and Lanark District Health Unit warns against harmful algal blooms in local water bodies, advising to avoid contact and consuming fish from affected areas.

Leeds, Grenville, and Lanark District Health Unit warn residents about potential dangers of harmful algal blooms in local bodies of water. These blooms, including blue-green algae, can release toxins that may harm humans and animals, and the presence of such toxins can only be detected through laboratory tests. The health unit advises avoiding contact with surface water for recreational purposes and drinking, as toxins from harmful algae are not removed by common treatment methods such as boiling, chlorination, or ultraviolet light treatment. They also recommend being cautious when consuming fish caught in affected areas, as toxins concentrate in liver, kidneys, and other organs. Residents are encouraged to report new potential blooms to the Spills Action Centre.
