0.5% increase in UK retail sales in July largely driven by food sales and summer spending.

0.5% increase in UK retail sales in July was driven by food sales, up 2.6% compared to last year; non-food items sales declined 1.7% as consumers spent on holidays and entertainment. Late summer weather spurred purchases of summer clothing and health/beauty products, but also reduced demand for indoor items like furniture and appliances. Only 39% of consumers reported increased spending due to warmer weather, with average Briton reducing expenses by £133.40.
