US coal stockpiles at electric power plants reached 138 million short tons at the end of May 2024, highest since the first half of 2020. Seasonal increase in spring stockpiles for summer and winter demand. Despite decline in US coal power generation, coal holds 16% of electricity generation, more than wind (11%), hydropower (6%), and solar (4%). Stockpiles have generally declined, with coal consumption by electric power sector down 43% since 2016.
