Supreme Court asks West Bengal govt to provide data on OBCs' social and economic backwardness and inadequate representation.

The Supreme Court has asked the West Bengal government to provide data on social and economic backwardness and inadequate representation of 77 communities, mostly Muslim, designated as Other Backward Classes (OBCs) for quota benefits. The court also issued notices to private litigants who challenged the inclusion of these communities in the OBC list and questioned the process followed by the state government. The Calcutta High Court had earlier declared the OBC status of several classes in West Bengal granted since 2010 as illegal.
