Spanish journalist Pablo González, accused of Russian spy work, was released in a US-Russia prisoner swap.
Spanish freelance journalist Pablo González, accused of being a Russian spy and arrested in Poland in 2022, was released in a prisoner swap between the US and Russia. González, who had another passport and the name Pavel Rubtsov, was suspected of being an agent of Russia's military intelligence, the GRU. Poland held him without trial before including him in the swap, citing the close Polish-American alliance and "common security interests." Born in Moscow, González moved to Spain as a child and gained Spanish citizenship, working for various media outlets, including Spanish news agency EFE and Voice of America. His release and inclusion in the swap have heightened suspicions about his true identity and role.
