South Africa's Democratic Alliance requests a national debate on escalating electricity tariffs, citing a proposed 36.15% increase in 2025 by Eskom.

South Africa's Democratic Alliance (DA) has requested a national debate on escalating electricity tariffs, which they argue are becoming increasingly unaffordable for many households. DA spokesperson Kevin Mileham warns that a 36.15% tariff increase in 2025 proposed by state-owned power utility Eskom risks pricing households out of the electricity market and increasing energy poverty. The average Eskom tariff increased by 450% between 2007 and 2022, while inflation increased by 129%, causing electricity tariffs to quadruple in real terms in 14 years.
