Obstetrician/gynaecologist breached code for inadequate ectopic pregnancy treatment info, leading to surgery and exposing systemic issues within the district hospital.

New Zealand's Health and Disability Commissioner found an obstetrician/gynaecologist breached the Code of Health and Disability Services Consumers' Rights for managing an ectopic pregnancy. The clinician failed to provide the woman with adequate information on treatment options and their risks and benefits, leading to her undergoing surgery. The commissioner's report also highlighted systemic issues within the district hospital, including inadequate documentation and inconsistent treatment guidelines. Health NZ has since made changes to address these issues.
