Contact Energy in New Zealand has announced it will end the practice of charging disconnection and reconnection fees for non-payment, following a petition by Common Grace Aotearoa. This decision aims to support struggling families and is in line with Contact's removal of charges for prepay customers two years ago. The company is also working with metering companies to upgrade homes to smart meters, allowing customers to take advantage of time-of-use plans.
