The Shoton Festival, or Yogurt Festival, began in Lhasa, capital of China's Xizang Autonomous Region, on August 4th. Originating in the 11th century and listed as intangible cultural heritage in 2006, highlights include unveiling a large thangka painting of Buddha and traditional events such as opera performances and horse racing. This year, locals have a holiday on Monday in addition to the usual weekend celebrations.
