2021 prison violence in England and Wales increased by 27% with record high self-harm incidents.

Post-pandemic prison violence in England and Wales surged by 27%, with 104 assaults on staff and 336 prisoner-on-prisoner assaults. Self-harm incidents hit a record high of 73,804 in a 12-month period, equating to one prisoner every seven minutes. The Prison Reform Trust has called on the government to restore safety and stability in prisons.
