Australian Senate urges Telstra and Optus to delay 3G shutdown amid public safety concerns.

Australia's Telstra and Optus plan to proceed with shutting down their 3G networks in August and September, respectively, despite concerns raised by a Senate committee over potential impacts on public safety and emergency services. The Senate Rural and Regional Affairs and Transport References Committee has recommended Communications Minister Michelle Rowland to request the companies to delay the shutdown, and if refused, to order a delay herself. The committee also emphasized the need for better understanding of the impacts on non-phone devices such as medical alerts and fire alarms.
