UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres emphasized the importance of upholding indigenous peoples' rights to live in peace and dignity on the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples on 9th August. Represents 6% of the global population, indigenous peoples significantly contribute to environment and biodiversity, but face challenges including deforestation, land degradation, threats, and violence. Guterres calls for international community support to protect their rights, self-determination and guard against unwanted contact that may impact cultures, languages, and livelihoods.
