Georgia Governor Kemp suspends Newton County Commissioner Chairman Marcello Banes due to money laundering and wire fraud charges.
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp suspended Newton County Board of Commissioners Chairman Marcello Banes after a federal indictment charged him with money laundering and wire fraud, alongside Commissioner-elect Stephanie R. Lindsey. The suspension occurred due to the pair allegedly misleading a company interested in purchasing land from the Joint Development Authority, causing the company to believe Lindsey would receive a $150,000 commission, while Banes secretly received $100,000 through a business they established together. Banes' suspension will continue until the end of the investigation or his term of office.
