The UK's Labour government cancelled a £800m supercomputer project, part of a £1.3bn funding cut, citing it as necessary for economic stability and growth.

The UK's new Labour government has cancelled a planned £800m supercomputer project announced by the Conservatives, which would have been 50 times more powerful than any other computer in the UK. This forms part of a £1.3bn funding cut that also includes the cancellation of a £500m AI project. The supercomputer, or exascale, was intended to be based in Edinburgh and had been hoped to speed up scientific research in areas like medicines and nuclear fusion. The University of Edinburgh had already spent over £30m building a casing for the new model. The Labour government stated that these spending decisions are necessary to restore economic stability and deliver the national mission for growth.
