New Zealand plans to replace the failed Te Pūkenga experiment with a sustainable, regionally responsive vocational education system.

New Zealand's Tertiary Education and Skills Minister Penny Simmonds announced a consultation on replacing the failed Te Pūkenga experiment with a sustainable, regionally responsive vocational education system. The Te Pūkenga merger, which cost hundreds of millions and failed to provide quality learning, will be replaced by redesigning the Institute of Technology and Polytechnic network, setting industry-led standards, and changing vocational education funding from 2026. Feedback is sought over six weeks, aiming to create a system supporting people, industries, and communities.
