50 million ARC Automotive and unnamed manufacturer airbag inflators, found in 49 million vehicles, pose a safety risk, causing injuries and deaths.

The US auto safety regulator, NHTSA, maintains its decision that over 50 million airbag inflators produced by ARC Automotive and another unnamed manufacturer pose a significant risk to vehicle safety. These inflators, found in approximately 49 million vehicles from 13 different manufacturers, can explode and release shrapnel, posing a threat to drivers and passengers. The NHTSA has attributed at least seven injuries and two deaths in the US and Canada since 2009 to these defective inflators. Despite opposition from automakers, the NHTSA intends to pursue a massive recall, with both ARC and the respective automakers required to recall the hazardous inflators if the decision is made. A final decision is expected after a 30-day comment period.
