Kenya's Court of Appeal declares 2023 Finance Act unconstitutional, citing procedural flaws.

Kenya's Court of Appeal has ruled the 2023 Finance Act unconstitutional, adding to President William Ruto's challenges. The Finance Act, which aimed to generate over $2.1 billion and ease Kenya's debt-servicing costs, introduced numerous new or increased taxes on basic goods and services, sparking widespread protests. The Court found the law to be unconstitutional due to flaws in parliamentary procedures. This year's finance bill, which proposed more tax hikes, also faced protests. The ruling raises concerns over the government's ability to raise revenue and service its $78 billion public debt.
