India's Supreme Court allows states to sub-classify SCs and STs for additional quotas in education and jobs.

The Supreme Court of India has ruled in a 6:1 majority that Indian states can sub-classify Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) to offer additional quotas for education and jobs. The court's decision aims to ensure that more backward castes within these groups receive necessary support and opportunities. The Constitution bench, consisting of seven judges, arrived at this conclusion after considering the necessity of accommodating the various levels of social and economic backwardness within SCs and STs.
