23-year-old Chen Yulu has embraced the role of an ambassador for nüshu, a centuries-old secret script once known only to a limited number of women in southern China. Barred from formal education in Chinese, these women developed their own writing system, nüshu, in the women's quarters of rural Jiangyong homes. Today, the script is gaining popularity among young people, who are spreading it through independent bookstores, subway ads, craft fair booths, tattoos, art, and everyday items like hair clips. Nüshu's revival serves as a symbol of empowerment for young Chinese women.
