Pakistan experienced a primary surplus in FY24 after 20 years, despite a widened federal budget deficit.

Pakistan reported a primary surplus in FY24 after a 20-year gap, achieving a primary balance of Rs0.952 trillion (0.9% of GDP). Despite a 53% increase in government net income, the federal budget deficit widened to a record Rs7.7 trillion. Pakistan's budget deficit improved to 6.8% of GDP in FY24, compared to 7.7% in FY23. Primary balance also improved, achieving a surplus of 0.9% of GDP in FY24 compared to a deficit of 1% in FY23.
