NASA astronaut Jim Buchli, the first North Dakota native in space, has been awarded the state's highest civilian honor, the Theodore Roosevelt Rough Rider Award. Buchli, a member of Astronaut Group 8, completed four Space Shuttle missions between 1985 and 1991. The Rough Rider Award, first presented in 1961, is given to North Dakotans who have achieved national recognition for their accomplishments.
