Former Sen. Ernie Chambers, who was the only Black person in the Nebraska Legislature for years, has withdrawn from his bid to rejoin the legislature. Chambers, a well-known advocate for racial justice and the powerless, has represented the North Omaha district multiple times since 1971. Despite his efforts to ban corporal punishment in Nebraska schools and eliminate the sales tax on groceries, he was unable to eliminate the state's death penalty.
