Uttar Pradesh Assembly is set to consider and pass an amendment to the Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, increasing the maximum punishment to life imprisonment and a fine of Rs 5 lakh. The amendment aims to enhance the scope and severity of punishment for crimes related to 'love jihad', including life imprisonment for threatening, attacking, marrying, or conspiring to marry with the intent of conversion. The proposed bill allows any person to register an FIR in conversion cases and makes cases non-bailable.
