South Africa's Energy and Electricity Minister reviews electricity pricing policy to address affordability issues for poor households.

South Africa's Energy and Electricity Minister, Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, announced a review of the country's electricity pricing policy to address escalating affordability issues for poor households. The review, in consultation with the South African Local Government Association, Eskom, and the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa), could significantly impact electricity tariff setting and low-income household subsidies. The review comes amid protests in Johannesburg over a R200 monthly surcharge for pre-paid customers to cover network costs and load-reduction measures in areas with overloaded substations.
