76-year-old Hong Kong publisher Jimmy Lai, founder of Apple Daily, testifies at his national security trial for alleged collusion with foreign forces and sedition.

76-year-old Hong Kong publisher Jimmy Lai, founder of the closed Apple Daily, will testify in his own defense at his national security trial. Arrested in 2020 after China imposed laws limiting public dissent, Lai faces charges of colluding with foreign forces to endanger national security and conspiring with others to publish seditious materials. If convicted, he could face life imprisonment. Lai's case is seen as a crucial test of press freedom and judicial independence in Hong Kong, where its press freedom ranking has fallen to 135th out of 180 countries and territories in the latest World Press Freedom Index.
