India's central government plans to make floodplain zoning legislation mandatory for states to access central flood management funds. Currently, only four states have enacted such laws. The Ministry of Jal Shakti is urging states to demarcate flood zones and implement the Flood Plain Zoning Act. The ministry aims to make this act a prerequisite for states to access funds under the Flood Management and Border Areas Programme.
