A St. Louis jury ordered Abbott Laboratories to pay $495 million in damages to the family of an Illinois girl who developed necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) after using its specialized formula for premature infants. This is the first trial out of hundreds of similar claims against the company, involving cow's milk-based formula and products specially made for infants in hospital settings. The jury awarded $95 million in compensatory damages and $400 million in punitive damages.
