Houston Mayor appoints Tom Munoz, a 26-year experienced first responder, as HFD chief, succeeding Sam Peña.

Houston Mayor John Whitmire appoints Tom Munoz as the new chief of the city's HFD (Houston Fire Department). Munoz, with over 26 years of experience as a first responder, emergency manager, and Coast Guard, takes over from Sam Peña, who has been serving as the HFD chief since December 19, 2016. Munoz, previously the director of Houston's Office of Emergency Management, will be the department's 37th chief since 1895.
