2-year-old Masai giraffe Matu died during castration under anesthesia at Toronto Zoo.
2-year-old Masai giraffe, Matu, died at Toronto Zoo during a castration procedure under general anesthesia. The procedure was planned to keep Matu with his family group. A reproductive science team collected genetic material and a necropsy will determine cause of death. The zoo has fewer than 35,000 Masai giraffes in its population, down 50% in 30 years due to hunting and habitat loss.
