US military constructs infrastructure in northern Australia for potential South China Sea crisis response.
The US military is constructing infrastructure in northern Australia to support potential responses in the South China Sea in case of a crisis with China. Key locations include Darwin and RAAF Base Tindal, with facilities being expanded for B-52 bombers, F-22 stealth fighters, and refuelling/transport aircraft. The $300m project is part of a larger strategy to distribute US forces across the region and make them less vulnerable, with Australia's government also set to spend A$14bn to "harden" its northern bases.
