UK CMA warns drivers pay too much for fuel due to high retail margins; recommends compulsory pricing transparency scheme.
The UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) warns that drivers are still paying too much for fuel, with retail margins significantly above historic levels. Fuel prices have cost drivers over £1.6bn in 2023 alone, and supermarkets' fuel margins are roughly double what they were in 2019. The CMA suggests that the Government should use recent legislation to launch a compulsory scheme to ensure fuel retailers share price information, allowing motorists to compare forecourt deals.
