Animal welfare NGOs and Ethical Farming Ireland urge the European Commission to act against transport of unweaned calves from Ireland to France, claiming it violates EU law. An audit report from December 2023 stated that the journey, with calves not fed during ferry crossing, breaches Regulation 1/2005 on animal transport protection. The trip lasts up to 60 hours, with some calves as young as 15 days old. NGOs have called on shipping company Stena Line to end the practice.
